- The coin was created and released as part of a commemorative set, in recognition of the coronation of King George VI, which took place at Westminster Abbey in London on 12th May 1937.
- The reverse of the coin prominently features the numerical value of '1', representing the monetary value of One Penny, a design which was originally created by Jean Baptiste Merlen in 1822.
- The year '1937', is shown on the reverse of the coin, divided at either side of the numerical value.
- The heraldic 'Tudor Crown', design, also known as the 'Imperial Crown', design, is illustrated above the numerical value on the reverse of the coin.
- The design of the Tudor Crown replaced the St. Edward's Crown design in 1888, an alteration made by Leonard Charles Wyon.
- The Tudor Crown, also known as the Imperial Crown, was a crown created in the early 16th century for either King Henry VII or King Henry VIII, the first Tudor monarchs of England. The crown was destroyed in 1649 during the English Civil War.
- The design on the reverse of the coin is surrounded by the depiction of an open oak wreath.

- The Latin inscription around the obverse of the coin, 'GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP', an abbreviation from 'GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA BRITANNIARUM OMNIUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR INDIAE IMPERATOR', translates as 'George the Sixth, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India', in English.
- The initials 'HP', of the artist Thomas Humphrey Paget OBE who created the uncrowned portrait of King George VI, are displayed on the obverse of the coin, below the neck of the portrait.
